5.6m Electric Aluminium RIB – Naval Architecture & Structural Engineering for Odyssey Boats and RAD Propulsion

BRYD delivered the naval architecture and structural engineering for the Odyssey 560, a 5.6-metre aluminium RIB developed in collaboration with Odyssey Boats and used by RAD Propulsion as its live demonstration platform.

Designed for both recreational and commercial applications, the Odyssey 560 combines a robust aluminium hull with RAD Propulsion’s 40 kW electric drive and battery system, delivering quiet, zero-emission operation on the water.

Engineered for Electric Propulsion

The vessel was designed around the integration of its electric propulsion system, with particular attention to battery positioning, weight distribution and structural support.

A central battery enclosure is incorporated into the hull structure, with dedicated frames and supports positioning the battery low and along the vessel’s centreline to support stability and balance.

Constructed from 5083 marine-grade aluminium, the hull offers strength, durability and recyclability. Material selection and structural efficiency were key considerations throughout the design, supporting the project’s focus on reducing environmental impact without compromising performance or versatility.

The result is a practical, durable electric RIB designed for demanding marine environments, demonstrating how thoughtful naval architecture and structural engineering can support the transition towards more sustainable marine propulsion.

Design & Engineering

BRYD’s Contribution

BRYD developed the Odyssey 560 from concept through naval architecture, structural engineering and production design, delivering a complete aluminium design package to Odyssey Boats. Our scope included the hull form and general arrangement, ISO 12215-5 scantlings, the structural arrangement, the 3D model and fabrication drawings, including hull assembly and weld sequences.

Engineered in Aluminium

Hull, deck and structure are 4 mm and 5 mm 5083 H111 plate, with a 10 mm keel and transom, while 5052 is used for non-structural parts such as the console and seating, which are bolted in place. A longitudinally framed structure of keel, mid stringers and outer longitudinals, crossed by eight transverse frames, carries the loads of the 22° deadrise planing hull and the battery installation.

Every plate and frame is defined in a single structural master model, from which the parts list and fabrication drawings are produced, so the boat can be built accurately and repeatably.

Compliance

The design was documented to ISO 6185-3:2024 for rigid inflatable boats under 8 metres, with scantlings to ISO 12215-5 and assessments of level flotation, offset load and heel due to wind, supporting compliance with the UK Recreational Craft Regulations and EU Directive 2013/53/EU for Design Category C.
